ALKALI
What is it?
Alkali solutions contain high concentrations of hydroxide ions (OH-). As we have learned, solutions with high amounts of hydroxide ions are classified as bases. The term "alkali" is often used interchangeably with the term "base."
Give me an example!
Have you ever heard of the Great Salt Lake in Utah? This huge inland lake contains large amounts of alkali salts. Over the centuries these salts have accumulated in the area around the lake and formed a desert called the Salt Flats. These alkali salts are so caustic (or destructive) to living organisms that hardly any animals or plants can live there.
