BASE
What is it?
Bases are compounds that ionize (or break down) to form hydroxide (OH-) ions in water. Substances with pH values of seven or higher are considered to be bases. Litmus paper turns blue when exposed to a base.
Give me an example!
You know how shampoo feels slippery? That is a general characteristic of base substances. Most soaps and many household cleaning products are bases. However, many of these cleaners are highly corrosive as well (capable of dissolving things away ... like your skin!), so it's always a good idea to protect your hands with rubber gloves when using them!
