GEAR RATIO

What is it?

A gear ratio is a mathematical expression of how fast the input gear in the system is turning in comparison to how fast the output gear in the system is turning. If the input gear is turning faster than the output gear, the system is said to have a power ratio. If the input gear is turning slower than the output gear, the system is said to have a speed ratio.

Give me an example!

Have you ever noticed the different sizes of front and back sprockets on bicycles? These different sizes provide lots of gear ratios to choose from for different situations. If you select a front sprocket that is smaller than the back sprocket, you will create a power ratio that helps you go up a hill more easily. If you select a front sprocket that is larger than the rear sprocket, you will create a speed ratio that makes it easier for you to go faster on a level or downhill grade.
