THE KING
What is it?
Capturing your opponent's king is the object of the game in chess. The king may move only one space at a time, but he may move in any direction -- forward, backward, left, right, or diagonally. Since the king only moves one space at a time, he cannot jump other pieces.
Give me an example!
Most of the time the only movements the king makes on the chessboard are defensive moves -- sidestepping an advancing bishop, knight, rook, queen -- or even a lowly pawn! However, under special circumstances the king can trade places with the rook, which is called castling.
