THE KNIGHT
What is it?
Knights are unusual chessmen because of the way they can move. Knights move in an L-shaped pattern of two squares in one direction and then one square in a different direction. Just remember this little saying when it comes to how to move your knight: "Up two and over one."
Knights are the only chess pieces that may jump, too! When a knight moves, it may jump over other pieces to get to an open space to land in ... or to land on an opponent's piece and take it! That often makes your knight your secret weapon!
Give me an example!
Knights are extremely flexible and may use their L-shaped move pattern of "Up two and over one" to give you a choice of eight different moves! For example, a knight may move forward two and to the right one; forward two and to the left one; two to the right and one forward; two to the right and one backward; two to the left and one forward; two to the left and one backward; two backward and one to the right; or two backward and one to the left. You can see why it's hard to stop a charging knight!
