THE PAWN

What is it?

The pawn is the piece on the chessboard that gets the least respect. Pawns move only one square at a time, either straight ahead or ahead to the left or right diagonally (or at an angle). On their first move only, pawns have the option of moving two squares forward. Pawns may not jump over other pieces.

Give me an example!

Since the chessboard is a battlefied, pawns have been called the footsoldiers of the chessboard. But remember -- footsoldiers are often the ones who actually win wars!
