ROOK

What is it?

The rook chess piece was modeled after the tower of a medieval castle. Rooks are long-range weapons that can move any number of spaces in four directions -- either forward, backward, or side to side -- but not diagonally (or at an angle). Rooks may not jump over other pieces.

Give me an example!

Did you know that the word "rook" also means "deception"? In fact, one of the coolest defensive moves on the chessboard was named after the rook -- castling. This slick maneuver allows the rook to trade places with the king to prevent the king from being captured.
