SPUR GEAR

What is it?

A spur gear transfers power straight across to another gear or to a chain. When you line up more than one spur gear, their teeth mesh and they can turn each other. Spur gears got their name because they look like the spurs a cowboy wears on his boot.

Give me an example!

Your bicycle is equipped with spur gears - the front and rear sprockets. Notice that the teeth of these gears stick straight out from the center of the gear, just like the teeth on the outside of a cowboy's spur. On a bicycle, the front sprocket or spur gear is used to turn a chain and transfer power to the rear wheel.
